You’ve seen them. Perhaps you were cruising down 5th Ave. in Naples or driving to RSW in Fort Myers. They looked like Mercedes-Benz automobiles but there was something different about them. The bodies were lower to the ground, some had bulges on the hood as if there was something in the engine compartment that was too large and they just looked…fast.

If you find yourself behind one at a stoplight you might notice that the last three letters in the badge are AMG®. A Mercedes-Benz that carries that designation is a very special automobile indeed.

AMG® is the performance division of Mercedes-Benz. Steeped in a history and culture of racing, AMG® began as the brainchild of two German engineers who had a passion for converting stock Mercedes-Benz vehicles into blazingly fast racing machines. Building engines from scratch, by hand, became and remains AMG®’s hallmark. One man one engine is the mantra at the AMG® Design Center in Affalterbach, GE where the six current versions of AMG® engines are created individually by one of roughly 50 Master Engine Builders.

It started with creating powerful engines but quickly morphed into custom transmissions, integration with 4MATIC® and other Mercedes-Benz technology advances, hand sewn interiors and of course exteriors that reflect the strong Mercedes-Benz racing blood line. A Mercedes-Benz tagged with AMG® is the “super” version of that model featuring a brilliant blend of performance engineering and stunning, exterior lines.

An AMG® is ideal for those Mercedes-Benz customers who are performance enthusiasts and want the sense of exclusivity that comes with the power and unique appearance of an AMG® model. Why are we such huge fans of AMG®?

Consider for a moment the 2014 CLA 45 AMG®. This vehicle started out as an entry level CLA 250 which comes standard with a turbocharged 4 cylinder engine delivering 208 horsepower and 258 ft-lb torque. AMG® works its magic and suddenly that CLA 250 becomes a CLA 45 AMG® with a 4 cylinder engine that pours out 355 horsepower and a power surging 332 ft-lb of torque.

If you are heading to Marco Island and you spot a vehicle about the size of a CLA 250 sporting the Mercedes-Benz tri-star but having an exterior with sharp lines, wide wheel arches and a road hugging body you are probably looking at a CLA 45 AMG®. AMG® is about more than engines, it is a unique package that takes an already superior vehicle to the rarified next level.

At the other end of the spectrum is the GL63 AMG®. If your requirements demand a large 7 passenger SUV you do not have to give up performance or sport handling. The GL63 AMG® comes equipped with a 5.5 L biturbo V8 that generates an astounding 550 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 60 in 4.8 seconds. Your family run from Naples to Miami across Alligator Alley could become more interesting.

The AMG® is Not for Everybody But if it’s for You…
Almost everyone will appreciate the design and luxurious interiors of AMG® models but not everyone needs or wants engines like the 6.0 L V12 packing 621 horsepower that powers the CL65 AMG®. However, if the idea of owning a luxurious high performance vehicle appeals to you, we encourage you to visit the showroom to learn more about AMG®.

These are rare creatures of the road and there aren’t that many between Fort Myers and Marco Island.
