Mercedes-Benz has a long history of automotive innovation including the invention of the automobile itself. In 1886 Carl Benz was awarded a German patent for a self-propelled, three wheel “motorwagen” that looks similar to the personal mobility devices that folks who have trouble walking use today. One has to wonder how Carl would react if he could slide into the driver’s seat of an S-Class sedan to get a firsthand look at the business his single cylinder tricycle began.

One area that Mercedes-Benz has always excelled in is automotive safety leading the industry in critical safety innovations that are universally used today. In 1951 Mercedes-Benz introduces the “crumple zone” concept and rigid cabin cage that disperses crash energy while providing a safe zone for passengers. Today crumple zones and safety cages are used almost universally in every car in America.

In 1978 Mercedes-Benz introduces the Antilock Brake System (ABS) that becomes the cornerstone of automotive safety. The ability to control braking power to individual wheels creates the basis for many of today’s advanced technologies like lane tracking and driver assist.

Incredible Vehicle Safety Innovation

Examples of advanced safety features include:

• PRESAFE®. A system that uses sensors in other safety features to senses an impending collision and prepares the passengers and cabins. Seat belts are automatically snugged, front head rests are adjusted and widows and sunroof are automatically closed to minimize damage in the passenger cabin.
• DISTRONIC PLUS® with PRESAFE® Brake. There’s a reason you shouldn’t text and drive. Even a moment of distraction can have disastrous results unless you are driving a Mercedes-Benz equipped with DISTRONIC PLUS® with PRESAFE® Brake. Radar scans the traffic ahead and when it detects an imminent collision it automatically applies 40% brakes and audibly alerts the driver and activates Pre-Safe®. If the driver does not respond the system will apply full braking power.
• Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist. Blind spots do not go away. Cameras mounted on the rear bumper keep track of traffic entering your blind spot and will alert you if you signal a lane change or move in that direction. Lane keeping keeps an eye on the lane markers and will vibrate the steering wheel if it detects that you are drifting. Further it can apply braking power to one side and nudge you back into the center of the lane.
• Night View Assist® PLUS. Using infrared detectors Night View Assist® picks out bikers, animals and pedestrians in the dark and can even target the headlights to illuminate them. Given the popularity of cycling in Naples and the abundance of wildlife between Fort Myers and Marco Island, this is a safety feature that can truly come in handy. And unlike most infrared systems, the Mercedes-Benz Night View Assist® can identify cold items as well.
